“Using highly effective delivery methods, the “Selling Added Value” programme has been invaluable in enabling us to demonstrate the additional benefits that contracting with our social enterprise brings.

The training used a methodology that we could apply to all areas of our business and, crucially focused on working from the perspective of the potential customer.  I highly recommend it to any social enterprise.”

What does a community café, a community transport company and a childcare centre all have in common? They all offer added value to their customers – especially if they contract their services out.

Measuring the added value can be tricky, time consuming and is a bit of a rough science. Now thanks to investment by the Learning and Skills Council, we have developed a new programme that short cuts the audit process to identify a monetary value of the extra benefits of community service delivery. So a community café that provides jobs for the unemployed taking people off benefits and training them in catering will soon be proving that every £1 spent on a sandwich is giving back say £3 in value because of the extra social benefits they were set up to provide.

GOOD NEWS for contracting

There is a lot of talk about Social Enterprises getting more work in the public sector because of the way they deliver and the extra outcomes they provide. But we have not been able to prove it well enough to those responsible for awarding contracts. Tying added value to public sector targets is of real interest to commissioners and procurers now.

SELLING ADDED VALUE is a tool designed to do just that – demonstrate your added value to those responsible for awarding contracts in terms that they will recognise and want to buy.

HOW do we do it?

SELLING ADDED VALUE uses some best practice in setting indicators to help you map the added value and impact that you achieve directly to targets that procurement officers and commissioners are seeking to buy.

The difference between this programme and traditional social accounting approaches is that we involve the buyer from day one and engage them in a dialogue that ensures that we are demonstrating what we do in terms that are meaningful to them that they can award contracts against.

WHAT does it involve?

Over a timescale, set by you, we will train you to map your impacts against your activities. Managers will understand the record where their added value is produced on outcomes and impact beyond the outputs you are contracted to deliver.

By checking with buyers we will focus on the areas of real added value to them.

You will have to commit 2 full days and some follow up work to complete the course.

At the end of the training, you will produce a short value statement for use in tendering and sales that will present your organisations added value in quantified terms, directly related to outcomes that buyers are seeking.

Are you eligible?

You must be a social enterprise.
